What is FinOps

FinOps isn’t just about cutting cloud costs—it’s about transforming how engineering, finance, and business teams collaborate to maximize the value of every dollar spent in the cloud. At its core, FinOps (Financial Operations) is a cultural practice that brings financial accountability to the variable spend model of cloud computing. Unlike traditional IT procurement where costs were fixed and predictable, cloud resources can be spun up instantly by any developer, creating a distributed spending model that requires new approaches to cost management and optimization.

The FinOps Lifycycle

The FinOps lifecycle operates on three key principles: Inform, Optimize, and Operate. First, teams need visibility into their cloud spend through proper tagging, cost allocation, and real-time dashboards that show not just what we’re spending, but why. This transparency enables the second phase—optimization—where teams identify waste, right-size resources, leverage reserved instances, and architect for cost efficiency. Finally, the operate phase establishes ongoing processes where cost considerations become part of every architectural decision, sprint planning session, and deployment pipeline. It’s about making cost a non-functional requirement alongside performance and reliability.

Ongoing Impact of FinOps

The business impact of mature FinOps practices is substantial. Organizations typically see 20-30% cost reductions in their first year, but the real value comes from increased velocity and innovation. When engineers understand the cost impact of their decisions and have the tools to optimize, they make better architectural choices. When finance teams have real-time visibility into cloud spend, they can forecast accurately and allocate budgets dynamically. When business stakeholders can see the direct correlation between cloud spend and business value, they make more informed investment decisions. FinOps isn’t about spending less—it’s about spending smarter to accelerate business outcomes.
